Abstract
Battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell trucks are considered as potential solutions to transition away from fossil fuels and cut down emissions in freight transport. This study carries out a technical and economic feasibility assessment to understand the technological potential and infrastructure requirements for both electric and hydrogen pathways, using a popular freight route in Iceland as case study. The results show that, even in adverse climate conditions, battery-electric trucks are as capable as fuel cell trucks while being more economically sound. Infrastructure investments are to be developed to enable the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles in Iceland.
