Abstract

Models of a 36MW submerged arc ferrosilicon (FeSi) furnace have been developed for the simulation and evaluation of different control schemes in Hauksdóttir et al. (1995, IEEE Trans. Control System Technol, 3(4), 377-387) and (Hauksdóttir and Gestsson, 1996, Proc. 13th IFAC World Congress, San Francisco, USA, pp. 421-426). In this paper, the models developed, describing the furnace controller, the electrode positioning equipment, the dynamics from the electrode positions to the electrode currents and the disturbance environment, effectively forming a FeSi furnace simulator, will be validated for two furnaces, as well as for different operating ranges.
