Abstract

Thorlindsson, Th. & Bjørnsson, S. 1979. Some Determinants of Scholastic Performance in Urban Iceland. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 23, 155–167. Using data on 1438 children from the urban area of Iceland this paper analyses the influence of social origin, family characteristics, and IQ, on scholastic performance in 6th, 8th, and 9th grades. The findings show that the given variables (SES, family size, family interaction, occupational and educational aspiration, and IQ) predict scholastic performance to a large extent, R2=.599. Although IQ is the best single predictor of scholastic performance, the findings suggest that both social structural and social psychological antecedents play an important part.
