Renewed activity of Nevado del Ruiz was first evidenced in November 1984 by increased fumarolic activity and felt earthquakes. This increased activity prompted an installation of seismometers on the volcano in July 1985. Earthquakes recorded in 1985 indicate that most of the seismic activity prior to the eruption on November 13, 1985, was confined to an L-shaped epicentral zone beneath the summit of the volcano. A swarm prior to the November eruption originated west of the summit. Telemetered stations installed after the eruption enabled better locations of post-eruptive activity. Majority of located post-eruptive earthquakes originate within 5 km of the summit at a depth less than 7 km and only few exceeded magnitude 3.
