Abstract

Of 38 liveborn preterm babies presenting by the breech during the 2-year period 1976-77, 10 were delivered by caesarean section. After excluding fetuses with severe congenital malformations, the subsequent course of those delivered by caesarean section was uncomplicated whereas the incidence of deaths from intracranial haemorrhage, especially in the lower weight ranges, was high amongst those delivered vaginally. Caesarean section may be the management of choice for the preterm baby presenting by the breech.
