Abstract

The equilibrium and transport properties of a two dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field are investigated. For the description of this situation, a lattice and a continuum model are proposed. Results for the spectrum, the electron density, the diamagnetic current and the Hall-conductivity, are obtained and compared. The properties of the models are strikingly similar if attention is restricted to the low energy part of the spectrum and only certain values of the magnetic field (in the lattice model) are allowed.
