Abstract

The copepod Lichomolgus canui Sars lives symbolically within the pharyngeal cavity of the ascidian Halocynthia pyriformis (Rathke). Halocynthia is a perennial species, which spawns in the early summer of its second year, followed by larval settlement in autumn. The copepod symbiote is an annual species, with a peak in reproductive activity in late summer followed by infestation of the ascidians. Each host is repeatedly infested and the number of copepods is linearly related to the size of the ascidians during the period of maximum infestation. The association is considered possible because of small food requirements of the symbiote, but a low food availability during winter results in high mortality and an absence of adult copepods during winter.
