Fjölmenning og sjálfbær þróun : lykilatriði skólastarfs eða óþægilegir aðskotahlutir?

Abstract

The article deals with two cross-curricular subject matter areas that have relatively recently entered Icelandic society and schools, multicultural and immigrant education (MIE) and education for sustainable development (ESD). Both areas call for global awareness and action competence to deal with current economic and political problems. The article aims at, first, observing how MIE and ESD are treated in the policy of state and municipal authorities, secondly assisting teacher to collect clauses from policy documents for better equipping them to follow developments in these subject matter areas, and finally connecting MIE and ESD by emphasizing the importance of global awareness and action competence. Policy documents from the ministries of education and for the environment and from the five most populated municipalites were analyzed. The findings and conclusions include that the policy documents tend to stay away from political and sensitive issues, that MIE and ESD should be declared as the center issues of the school curriculum, and that there is a need for developing a radical policy about the subject matter and about teaching methods in order to treat political and sensitive issues.
