Critical loads for forest soils in the Nordic countries

The critical loads of acids deposition have been mapped using the best available calculation models. The results of the model calculations indicate that 82% or 480 000 km2 of the total forested area of 625 000 km2 are currently receiving acid deposition in excess of the critical load. The results of the calculations indicate that a minimum acid deposition reduction over the Nordic countries equivalent to 85% of sulfur deposition and 30% of nitrogen deposition relative to 1990 is required in order to protect 85% of the forest soils from adverse effects of acidification. -Authors
