Project Details
Description
Greenland National Museum and Archive in collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark, Odense Museum, Institute of Forensic Medicine and the GLOBE Institute at the University of Copenhagen, Inuit Tattoo Traditions and the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University and the University of Iceland.
The project is a cross-institutional and scientific research project on a unique and well-preserved cultural heritage collection of mummies and skeletons of the Thule Inuit and their associated burial chamber from the island of Uunartoq in South Greenland. In the period 1929-1934, the graves were removed and distributed between Denmark and the USA. The project will explore the graves and what they can tell about the Inuit world of life, the world of death and heritage. The project will last from 2025 to 2027 as a collaboration across several countries. It has become possible after the mummies were handed over from the USA earlier this year at Greenland's request. However, the mummies initially came to Copenhagen because there is a lack of optimal facilities to store them in Nuuk.
