Description
Iceland is a global leader in gender equality, nevertheless, women face apparent exclusion from senior executive positions and men hold all but one CEO position at listed companies. To find an explanation for the lack of women CEOs, women sitting on the boards of all listed companies in Iceland were interviewed, asking: What do women board members experience as the reason for the lack of women CEOs; and what should be done. Findings reveal a deep dissatisfaction with the prevailing hiring practices that they experience as a fast-paced and closed process, heavily reliant on board-members’ networks and head hunters’ lists. The interviewees find the outcomes exclusionary for women and are conflicted about their own participation in the process. They voice the need for inclusion and call for disruptive tactics, more courage and gender quotas on the executive level.Period | 28 May 2022 |
