Utilizing Artificial Intelligence in Distance Learning: Opportunities, Challenges, and Innovation in Higher Education

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is transforming the landscape of higher education. This lecture discusses how educators can leverage AI to enhance communication, collaboration, and support students' self-regulation in distance learning.

The presentation references research findings, including two surveys answered by students (n=21 and n=27) in the course UPP110f The Internet and Information Retrieval, in the Department of Information Science at the University of Iceland’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Examples will be shown of how AI is used in teaching and learning. The multifaceted role of AI, its software, and methods to enhance the student learning experience are explored, as well as diverse ways to utilize AI to create a dynamic, personalized, and efficient online learning environment.

The results indicate that students strongly agree (n=20, 95%) that AI should be used in education. They reported feeling significant support and solidarity in group work where AI was employed. Additionally, students appear to be aware of the challenges and ethical concerns faced by learners in distance education regarding the use of AI in their studies.

Participants in the session will gain a deeper understanding of how AI can support educators in designing distance learning that students agree fosters engagement, communication, and self-regulation in learning.
