Description
The field of bioplastics research continues to receive attention driven by years of global overdependence on petroleum-based materials and efforts towards more sustainable chemical production. Bioplastics cover a range of polymers with varying chemical and physical characteristics. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of bioplastic polymers that can be synthesized by whole microbial cells using renewable feedstocks and energy. This talk will briefly introduce the ongoing research within the field of microbial biotechnology being conducted at the University of Akureyri (Iceland). Main topics will include sustainable production of bioplastics which has resulted in the isolation and identification of microbial PHA producers through collaborative efforts between The Scully Lab at UNAK and The Natural Materials and Polymer Processing Lab at Drexel. Recent results will be presented, and future directions discussed.Period | 1 Jul 2024 |
