Childrens friendship

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The aim of the research was to shed light on how educators use the Free of bullying material in preschools, primary schools, and after-school centres in Iceland and how teachers and children perceive friendships. The purpose was to shed light on what characterizes a school atmosphere that is safe and positive.
A positive school environment supports children and takes a “whole child” approach to education, seeking to address the distinctive strengths, needs, and interests of children as they engage in learning (Darling-Hammond & Cook-Harvey, 2018).
Friendship is a fundamental part of being human. Friends play an important role in the wellbeing of children (Corsaro, 2005; Einarsdóttir, 2006). Understanding which cues indicate friendship and what friendship entails is critical for navigating the social world (Afshordi & Liberman, 2021). Friendship is a protective factor and research confirms that relatedness is the dominant feature of friendship.
Children’s social and emotional skills affect their wellbeing and sense of belonging. Children who are happy can better engage in play (Hyson, 2004; Kostelnik et al., 2015). Helping children develop social and emotional skills is key in any good program for young children (Gordon & Browne, 2014).
