Description

Immunologists from the Nordic Countries and from around the world gather in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 11–14 June 2014, for the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Scandinavian Society for Immunology, SSI, to discuss the results of their most recent research and exchange scientific ideas. SSI, established in 1969, consists of the national immunology societies in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The Annual SSI Meeting rotates between the countries. This year the Annual SSI Meeting is hosted and organized by the Icelandic Society for Immunology, the fourth SSI Meeting held in Iceland. Previous SSI Meetings in Iceland were held 1985, 1994, the 25th Anniversary Meeting and 2003. The Annual Meeting is preceded by the traditional SSI Summer School, with the first one held in Iceland in 1985. We are very fortunate that this year's Summer School, Update and New Concepts in Basic and Translational Immunology, will be given by Distinguished Professor in Pathology Abul K. Abbas, University of California San Francisco, an outstanding scientist, teacher and author of some of the most popular textbooks in immunology. This is an excellent opportunity for all participants, in particular PhD students and young immunologists, to get an overview of new concepts in many fields of immunology; innate and adaptive immunity, T cell regulation, tolerance and autoimmunity. Many colleagues remember Professor Abbas's excellent Summer School at the joint meeting of SSI and the Baltic Immunological Society, 2010 in Tallinn, Estonia. After the meeting, there will be, for the first time, a joint initiative of SSI and the Swedish National Clinical Research School in Chronic Inflammatory Diseases (NCRSCID), where PhD students and postdocs discuss with senior researchers scientific advances that are likely impact on the understanding of chronic inflammatory diseases. The Annual Meeting itself consists of three symposia, one each day; Innate Immunity, Adaptive Immunity, Immunopathology and Immune Intervention, covering areas of strength in Scandinavian immunology, such as NK cells, inflammation, tolerance and autoimmunity, to mention a few. The plenary lectures will be given by leading scientists from all the Nordic countries, Europe and the USA. All the over 120 abstracts submitted to the meeting and printed in this issue of Scandinavian Journal of Immunology will be presented as posters, displayed during the whole meeting. Selected abstracts will be presented orally in six workshops. Scientific highlights of the meeting include a keynote lecture on Immunodeficiency from Professor Jean-Laurent Casanova, Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Rockefeller University, New York. By travelling to SSI 2014, held in the land of ice and fire, immunologists will be exposed to the wisdom of leading scientists in various fields of immunology. This is also an opportunity to experience the cultural life in Reykjavik, including art, music and excellent gastronomy. In June, the days are long and hardly any night, an excellent time to explore the beautiful Icelandic nature under the midnight sun. We hope that you will enjoy exciting scientific discussions and establish new collaborations to strengthen the science and friendship within the immunological community in Scandinavia.
